As the nation’s highway systems wear with age, repairs and reconstruction of the roadways and bridges are necessary to ensure that they are preserved for future generations. This New Jersey Turnpike Authority capital project involves reconstruction and repairs to five different bridge structures between milepost 83 and 88 on the New Jersey Turnpike in Edison and New Brunswick.
NJTA contractors will reconstruct the bridge deck, make repairs to the structural steel, strengthen the superstructure and make miscellaneous repairs to the New Jersey Turnpike bridge over the Raritan River. Contractors will also reconstruct the bridge decks and make miscellaneous repairs to four bridge structures between Milepost 84.55 and 87.1. Miscellaneous roadway improvements including lighting improvements, repainting of existing steelwork, catwalk retrofit and repairs, installation of climbing aids.
Work on this project began in March 2022 and it is expected to be completed by September 2025.
This project is divided into two work areas; the South Work Area, which includes work on the Turnpike bridge over the Raritan River and the North Work Area, which includes work on the four bridges between Milepost 84.55 and 87.1. The South Work Area consists of four primary stages and the North Work Area consist of five primary stages. Both the north and south work areas require work to be performed in a pre-and post-stage to maintain the existing lane capacity of the roadway.
The New Jersey Turnpike Authority is committed to minimizing the impact and addressing the concerns of drivers during construction activities.
During this project, New Jersey Turnpike contractors will coordinate with a number of different third parties to ensure the continued safe and efficient movement of transportation. This includes necessary traffic control, utility coordination, CONRAIL coordination, Coast Guard coordination and Local Agency coordination.
A portion of the project work will be conducted in condensed, nightly, weekend, part weekly and multi-week construction stages with single or multi-lane closings to minimize impacts to the public.
